Candidate Questionnaire Responses
1. How would your election to the ASAM Board of Directors benefit ASAM and the field of addiction medicine?
Electing me as ASAM Treasurer would bring disciplined fiduciary stewardship, executive
strategy, and frontline clinical perspective to the Board. As Treasurer and Finance Committee
Chair of the California Society of Addiction Medicine, an ASAM Finance Council member, and a
Federation of State Physician Health Programs Finance Committee member, I offer practical
experience in nonprofit financial governance, budgeting, investment oversight, and sustainable
growth.
As a double board-certified addiction medicine physician and neurologist, addiction medicine medical director, MBA-trained healthcare consultant formerly with Ernst & Young, and investment/financial advisor, I understand how financial decisions affect clinicians, patients, and access to care. I will help ensure ASAM’s resources are managed wisely and efficiently to advance education, evidence-based standards, advocacy, workforce development, and expanded access to addiction treatment. I will bring rigorous oversight and a mission-focused approach that strengthens ASAM’s long-term financial health and national impact.
2. Candidate Statement
Please note: I respectfully encourage members to vote for Dr. Jason Kirby for Treasurer and
would be happy to collaborate with him as part of the ASAM Finance Council for the next two
years. I respectfully ask for your vote for the ASAM Director-at-Large position. Please see my
profile and responses in that section of the voting platform. Thank you!
My eclectic and synergistic career integrates clinical, financial, operational, and technology leadership. I am a double board-certified addiction medicine physician and neurologist, active addiction medicine medical director, certified healthcare business consultant with an MBA, former Ernst & Young/EY healthcare management consultant, investment/financial advisor, and member of a digital health/AI medical advisory board. I also completed Stanford’s Healthcare AI Leadership program, which informs my commitment to advancing safe and ethical use of AI in healthcare that protects and advances the interests of both physicians and patients.
My ASAM service includes the Finance Council and Philanthropy Task Force, as well as participation in the Addiction Medicine Advocacy Conference. I also serve as Treasurer, Executive Committee Member, and Finance Committee Chair for the California Society of Addiction Medicine. These roles have shown me that sound governance must remain connected to clinical practice, advocacy, and patient care.
A principal goal is to remain equally active in my state chapter and strengthen collaboration and synergy between ASAM and its state chapters. I will promote bidirectional communication, so regional priorities help guide national strategy, education, advocacy, and resource allocation.
I humbly hope to use my experience to improve an already amazing organization. I will advocate for transparent stewardship and sustainable investment in ASAM’s mission.
